Tranquil, beautiful, eco-friendly oasis
This beautifully designed, 5 chalet lodge situated on a fabulous stretch of beach just has to be the place to stay in Inhambane! We just spent 5 days escaping from the Cape winter and I can honestly say that this has to be one of the best lodges I’ve ever stayed at. World class food, passionate, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and 3 cute dogs to top it off! The lodge runs entirely off solar power – and you will never have a cold shower! Solar means no hairdryers (who needs that on a beach holiday?!) or kettles in the rooms, but early morning coffee or tea is delivered to your balcony every morning, and is available all day long. The food is unbelievable – Sam the chef creates the most delicious meals – and needless to say our choice was always the seafood option! There’s a lovely fresh breakfast every morning (amazingly large passion fruit included!) and a choice of two starters and main courses, with a surprise dessert each night. During our stay we enjoyed Barracuda, Crayfish, Tuna and enormous langoustines, served up with flair and accompanied by a salad and veggie dish. Desserts were delish – I’m missing those!
The lodge is situated between Barra and Tofu – we spent some time on the beach in Barra and enjoyed the restaurants and activities on offer there. We had a great quad bike tour through the villages and via the back roads all the way to Tofu. The 2 hour trip with guide Jao was very reasonably priced and it was great to see how the locals lived.
This time of the year is whale season, and we saw many of these gracious beasts leaping out of the ocean each day. The lodge staff arranged a lovely sunset picnic for us on top of the dunes – and what a sunset it was! And on that day we spent hours watching a couple of mom whales teaching their babies how to breach. Unforgettable!
The Mozambique coastline is blessed with abundant sea life – the Humpback whales and dolphins, whale sharks, devil mantas which are only found there, and of course it’s a diver’s paradise. The lodge arranges transfers to whatever activity you choose.
On our last night we returned to our room to find a beautiful handwritten note thanking us for staying, with a lovely little carved whale as a memento of our time there. Such a lovely touch. To Liz, Roxy, Kate and Lisa (and all of the other amazing staff members), thank you for a glorious holiday. We’ll definitely be back!
